Get Your Absentee Ballot!

August 31, 2020

UPDATE! Absentee ballots have been sent out for all Connecticut towns. Ballots could be returned as of October 2. If you have not yet gotten your absentee ballot, contact your town clerk. You can return your ballot by mail or by dropping it in the ballot box, usually placed outside of your city or town hall (where the town clerk is located).

Those of us with PI and our families are limiting our exposure to groups of people whenever we can. That means absentee ballots for the November election are made for us.

Applications for absentee ballots (not the ballots themselves) are scheduled to be mailed to every registered voter on a rolling basis in early September.

If you are not sure if you are registered, you can check your status here

Traditionally, Connecticut has had strict rules about who was eligible to vote absentee, but now COVID-19 allows anyone who is concerned about their health to use an absentee ballot.

You must complete your request for the ballot and return it to your town clerk. This can be done by mail or you can use the ballot drop boxes typically set up outside town halls. By law, the ballots cannot be sent out before October 2.

Ballots must be in the town clerk’s hand by the close of polls, 8 pm on Tuesday, November 3. If you are concerned about mail delays, put it in the drop box.

If you are nervous about getting an application in the mail in time to request your ballot, you can download the request form here.

Steps for Voting November 2020

  1. Get your request for an absentee ballot
    1. Wait to get one in the mail
    2. Download from the Secretary of State (link above)
  2. Read the application carefully, and be sure to follow all instructions. To avoid delays, it wouldn’t hurt to have someone in your household double-check your work.
  3. Return the request to your town clerk
    1. By mail
    2. In the drop box by town hall
  4. Watch the mail for your ballot after October 2
  5. When you are comfortable, complete your ballot and return to your town clerk; it must be received by 8 pm election day, November 3.
    1. By mail
    2. In the drop box by town hall
